Breathe Easy: A Guide to Choosing Toxin-Free Candles

Ever wondered why it feels like toxins are lurking around every corner, from those infamous Abercrombie headaches to the questionable candle aisles in home goods stores?

As a health enthusiast, I’m exceptionally particular about what enters my home and goes into my body, especially when it comes to candles or scented products. After all, I've had my fair share of migraines triggered by harsh scents, and I'm sure many of you can relate to that misery.

Well, here's the truth: those headaches and woozy feelings are often caused by toxic fragrances lurking in many household products, but notoriously in candles.

But not to worry….there's a way to still enjoy the calming ambiance of candles without the discomfort. You simply need to be selective – read and understand the ingredients and decide what is right for you, just like you would for anything else you’d bring into your home. This article gives you all the information you will need to know before choosing your next toxin-free candle.

Choosing a Worry-Free Wax

There are plenty of waxes out there to choose from but we have outlined our top pick for both your health and a vibey meditation space! Ok, so here it goes – saving the best for last!

    • Paraffin wax – Avoid it!
This petroleum-based wax is a big no-no. It not only releases harmful chemicals when burned but is also non-renewable and bad for the environment. (side note: sadly, this also includes the paraffin wax foot masks they offer after a pedicure).
    • Palm Wax – Proceed with caution.
While it's derived from a natural source, unsustainable palm oil production can lead to deforestation. Look for sustainably sourced palm wax if you choose this option. We are big on saving the planet so this feels like an easy “no”.
    • Beeswax  Consider it!
Beeswax is a great option to try. It's natural, hypoallergenic, and has a sweet, honey-like scent. Plus, it burns with a beautiful warm glow. The biggest drawback is that it’s often blended with other toxic waxes to achieve a stronger scent.
    • Soy  Embrace it!
Soy wax is a natural, renewable resource that burns cleanly and evenly. The main drawback and the reason that many brands avoid it is because its natural, and therefore more inconsistent with its burn and appearance – air bubbles underneath the surface are very common (and normal) for 100% soy wax candles.
    • Coconut Soy  it’s the best (we’re partial, but it’s true!)
100% coconut-soy (or fondly called, coco-soy) gives you the best of both worlds – the clean and long-lasting nature of soy wax, with the consistent burn and smooth tops of creamy coconut wax.

Avoid Toxic Fragrances

Not all fragrances in candles are created with the rigorous standards we should expect.  With that said, it’s unfulfilling (and nearly impossible) to focus on 100% fragrance free lifestyle – perfection is not the goal, but we can do our best to limit exposure.

When you are purchasing a candle, look at the label and ensure that the candle does not include the following harmful chemical ingredients:

    • Pthalates
    • Parabens
    • Sulfates
    • Mutagens
    • Carcinogens

These ingredients are far too commonly found in our seemingly harmless home goods, and they are something we should be cautious of.  Important note: If you see a prop 65 warning label be wary and avoid.  It means that the product includes significant exposure to mutagens and carcinogens and companies are required to share that information but it’s at the expense of consumers.

Yogini candles uphold the highest health standards and avoid toxic aromas at all costs. After all, our candles are meant for meditative moments for ease and relaxation, not to cause headaches or chronic health conditions.

Avoid Colorants and Other Additives

In your quest for the perfect candle, you might come across beautifully colored wax candles or those that glisten with the allure of glitter. While they may look visually appealing, it's crucial to consider the potential health risks associated with these additives.

    • Colored Wax
Candles with vibrant, eye-catching colors may seem like a great way to match your decor or create a particular ambiance. However, most of these colorful candles achieve their hues through the use of artificial dyes and pigments. These dyes can release harmful chemicals into the air when the candle burns. Breathing in these fumes can be detrimental to your health, potentially triggering headaches, allergies, or other respiratory issues.

To safeguard your well-being, it's best to steer clear of colored wax candles and opt for the natural, unadulterated beauty of a traditional white wax candle.
    • Glitter and Toxic Artificial Micas:
Glitter, that shimmering wonder that adds a touch of magic to candles, is often nothing more than tiny plastic particles. When ignited, these particles can release toxic fumes into the air, posing a threat to both your health and the environment. Similarly, some candles incorporate artificial micas for that dazzling effect. Unfortunately, these artificial micas can also release harmful substances during combustion. Burning plastic, in any form, is not a fragrance you want wafting through your home.

While these additives are more apparent to the eye and may seem like a quick solution for achieving the perfect aesthetic, the potential health consequences far outweigh their visual appeal. But fear not, there's a creative and health-conscious workaround: find candles with stunning vessels, exquisite packaging, or thoughtful labeling that complements your space.

By selecting candles based on their containers or presentation, you can still achieve the visual harmony you desire without compromising your health.

Plus, this approach allows you to enjoy the candle's fragrance and the warm, soothing glow it provides, all while knowing you're making a mindful choice for your well-being. Remember, a candle is not just about the scent; it's about creating an environment that nurtures your body and soul. So, when in doubt, prioritize your health, and let your candle's elegance shine through in other ways.

Ok, there you have it – the scoop on candle toxins and how you can make a better decision the next time you are in the market!

Needless to say, but the inclusion of harmful chemicals and other additives is not at all necessary to create a beautiful and aromatic experience in your home. In a world where vigilance is required for almost every purchase, rest assured that we've taken utmost precautions in crafting candles that you can safely burn in your home without worry.
